Now Hiring! Recycling Communications Student Assistant

The mission of the MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center (SSRC) is to manage MSU's waste as a resource through an integrated system of reuse, recycling, collaboration, and education.To help us achieve these ambitions, the SSRC is looking for a creative student who is passionate about waste diversion to be our Recycling Communications Assistant.

This position will work closely with the Recycling Education Coordinator to create content for public and internal communication. By helping to publicize the activities of the Recycling Center, this impactful position promotes solid waste diversion, while also educating the campus and community on matters related to zero waste principles. Additionally, the ideal applicant will possess the interpersonal skills to interact with the public at tabling events and campus waste sorts.

The total hours per week for this position is 12-29, primarily between 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with infrequent evening and weekend events. Payrate: $12.00/hr.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Creating written, video, and graphic content for electronic and print publication.
  • Assisting with the management of social media accounts, including planning and maintaining a content calendar.
  • Brainstorming and developing new ideas for content and social media campaigns.
  • Assisting with the collection and analysis of social media impact using analytic software.
  • Assisting with public events, including informational tabling events and coverage of recycling events for content publication.
  • Conducting waste sorts on campus and at the SSRC.
  • Representing the MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center at communications, educational and industry events.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through writing, graphic arts, and/or videography.
  • Demonstrated professional experience using a combination of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube for communication or promotion.
  • Photography experience.
  • Willingness to get up close and personal with waste.
  • Interest in zero waste principles.
  • Comfortable interviewing fellow students, staff and others.
  • Empathetic problem solver and team player.
  • Able to work spring, summer, and fall 2019 semesters.
