MSU Recycling Bike Route Student Assistant

The MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center has an opening for a Recycling Bike Route Student Assistant to collect compost and deliver small items to campus as part of our bike material-collection program. The primary task involves riding a specialized electric bike, with an attached trailer, to pick up compost and recyclables, processing material upon return to the Recycling Center, and maintaining program supplies and equipment.

Assistant Responsibilities

  • Ride material collection routes
  • Process compost and recyclables following completion of collection routes
  • Record route data within office database
  • Maintain supplies and equipment, including bike and trailer maintenance, compost bin cleaning, and bin label replacement
  • Assist in continued route planning and implementation of additional material routes
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Student must be currently pursuing an undergraduate degree at Michigan State University
  • Student must be able to lift 25-50 lbs., occasional lifting of 75 lbs.
  • Student must be able to ride bike in all weather conditions, including rain and light snow
  • Passion for sustainability and cycling
  • Must have current driver's license and good driving record.
  • Ability to communicate program information to multiple campus partners, including answering questions and resolving small issues
