Waste Reclamation & Upcycling Student Assistant

The mission of the MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center (SSRC) is to manage MSU's waste as a resource through an integrated system of reuse, recycling, collaboration, and education. To help us achieve these ambitions, the SSRC is looking for a creative student who will assist with our waste diversion and upcycle projects.

The total hours per week for this position is 20 - 29, primarily between 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Must be able to work over the summer.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Reclaiming hardware (casters, knobs, handles, hangers, etc.) and other reusable materials from items being recycled or landfilled
  • Carry out basic DIY and minor repairs to furniture
  • Upcycling and reusing recycling and landfill materials to make saleable items
  • Designing methodologies for craft items to be made during workshops

Desired Qualifications

  • Upholstery, sewing, carpentry and general handicraft skills desired
  • Artistic and craft skills required
  • Creative flexibility to upcycle and reuse innovatively using a variety of materials
  • Previous upcycle and building skills but willing to train the right person

Additional Information

We are looking for someone who is not afraid to get dirty and is willing to look in landfill and recycling bins to see what could be repurposed or reclaimed. Having an eye for design is a plus.
