The MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center has a job opening in the Book Department for a student assistant in

Annual Book Sale

book processing.  The ideal applicant loves used books, and is committed to getting them in the hands of readers.  The SSRC receives more than 250,000 lb. of books and media each year and our mission is to find the best use for them. Each book has to be sorted by hand and evaluated for condition, value and appropriate market stream.  This position is vital to the success of our Annual Book and Media Sale, as well as helping to curate collections of books for special sales events. 

Hours are flexible around your class schedule and the SSRC Book Department is open 7:20 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (5:30 p.m. on Tuesday),  with infrequent opportunities to work weekend shifts. 

Pay starts at $9.25/hour.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Hand-sorting a large volume of books based on condition and value.
  • Processing, shelving, and boxing books for sale and storage.
  • Assisting books department lead assistant with curating collections for sale.
  • Assisting with setup and tear-down of book sale events.
  • Cleaning and maintaining organization of book processing area

Necessary Qualifications

  • Must be knowledgeable and enthusiastic about books.
  • Committed to finding the best reuse of books and media.
  • Able to perform duties in warm and cold conditions in a warehouse setting
  • Infrequent lifting of 50 lbs.
