Because we tackle waste in so many ways – recycling, Upcycling, selling items in-store and online, e-waste, and promoting best practices for diversion through education – we have a variety of opportunities that are sure to fit your current needs and benefit your future goals.

Another advantage of working at the SSRC is having most of your nights and weekends free, as we are open 7:20 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. most weekdays.

Current Openings Include:

Surplus Store Computer Department Sales Assistant

The MSU Surplus Store processes IT components and electronics from campus and the community.  Those items that have life, are made available for sale in our store. This position will provide customer service during sale days and stock the computer inventory.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Providing service to Surplus Store customers by answering their questions and offering solutions
  • Organizing and stocking computer and electronics merchandise on sales floor and in warehouse

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience providing excellent customer service
  • Able to communicate knowledge of computers, hardware, components, peripherals, and audio/video equipment
  • Interest in sustainability, recycling and re-use.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse population

Sales Floor Merchandising Assistant

The MSU Surplus Store is a key piece in keeping MSU’s property out of the landfill. By finding a new home for items the University no longer wants, we are able to find those items a new home, while also bringing in necessary revenue to support our diversion efforts.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Stocking,displaying merchandise, and maintaining cleanliness of defined sales floor area
  • Assisting with the pricing of Surplus items under the direction of area supervisor

  • Load and unload customer’s vehicles
  • Provides assistance to Surplus Store customers

Minimum Qualifications

  • Student must be able to lift 25-50 lbs., occasional lift of 75 lbs.
  • Work 15-29 hours on a combination of Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings.
  • Dependable, able work at a fast pace, self-starter, and hard-working

Desired Qualifications

Interest in sustainability, recycling and re-use.

Front Office Assistant

Assists Front Office Manager by answering Surplus and Recycling main phone line, filing paperwork, and verifying and checking pickup requests.

Assistant Responsibilities

  • Provides service to campus and public customers over the phone, via email, and at reception desk.
  • Files sales and service records.
  • Approves service requests.
  • Maintaining internal reference lists for recycling information and employee contact information
  • General office maintenance and cleaning. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Understanding of excellent customer service.
  • Professional, efficient, and accurate.
  • Able to work a minimum of 12 hours a week between 11:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Recycling Student Assistant

MSU Recycling is seeking a Student Recycling Assistant to process recyclable material from campus locations and the public recycling drop off. Occasional waste diversion projects to keep recyclable material from landfill.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Sorting material such as paper, plastic and cardboard.
  • Occasional clean-up of recycling around the building and Public Recycling Drop-off.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift 15-25 lbs.

Desired Qualifications:

  • An interest in recycling and diverting material from the landfill.
  • An early-riser, organized, dependable, self-reliant and hard-working.
  • Ability to communicate, work with in a team atmosphere and ask questions when in doubt.
  • The ability to identify things that can be re-used and diverted to Surplus/Upcycle.

Additional Information:

We operate Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Your nights and weekends are free.
