IPF Campus Services – Surplus Store & Recycling Center (SSRC) invites applications for the position of Recycling Education Coordinator.The SSRC manages reuse, recycling and waste for Michigan State University. Its mission is to manage MSU’s waste as a resource through an integrated system of reuse, recycling, collaboration, and education.

The position of Recycling Education Coordinator develops and implements education and outreach programs for the MSU community, encouraging zero waste behavior and supporting the operational goals of the SSRC. The department manages the collection and processing of 40 million pounds of reuse, recycling and waste materials annually for Michigan State University through a highest and best use model.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain programming that encourages waste reduction and maximizes capture rates, including, but not limited to: written content, signs, special events, workshops, and webinars.
  • Serve as the point of contact for all faculty and staff recycling contacts. Answer questions, provide customized resources, develop targeted communications to support waste minimization.
  • Assist in onboarding new staff members; conduct tours, represent the department at community meetings and give presentations.
  • Manage and interpret data for use in communications and reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge equivalent to that which would normally be acquired through a four year college degree in Public Relations, Communications, Business or in an area related to the work being performed; one to three years of related and progressively more expansive work experience in reuse, recycling or waste reduction education including planning and managing special events; Requires experience in word processing, database, spreadsheet, desktop publishing and/or presentation software. This position requires possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator's license; must drive a University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

MSU Surplus Store & Recycling has the unique advantage of managing the vast majority of the University's waste stream, allowing for an innovative and entrepreneurial approach to maximizing the value and minimizing the environmental impact of materials collected. Successful candidates should be able to demonstrate how they have been able to develop innovative programming that has minimized landfill/incineration rates in a business, municipal or university environment.

A creative and innovative lifelong learner with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population; able to problem solve within a collaborative team environment; ability to understand different perspectives while utilizing expert knowledge of the technical operations of the job.

Work Hours: Regularly, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., but may include nights and weekends for meetings or events.
