Own a Piece of MSU History

In 2005, Michigan Sate University replaced the original Spartan statue with a new bronze Sparty. You now have the chance to own a piece of the original statue dedicated in 1945. Bricks taken from the base of the ceramic Sparty are now available for purchase by true Spartan fans.

Our goal is to insure that anyone who wants to own a piece of Sparty can do so at an affordable price. Bricks have not been cleaned or altered in any way since the deconstruction of the original base. In many cases the bricks are cracked or chipped, and still have mortar attached. Each brick is unique in its size, color and condition. All bricks include a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity.

Your purchase of a "Sparty Brick" will help provide long-term care for the new and old Sparty statues.

Sparty History

The Spartan also know as "Sparty", was sculpted by former MSU Assistant Professor of Art, Leonard D. Jungwirth, from 1943 to 1945. Sparty was dedicated by President John Hannah on June 9, 1945. Weighing in at approximately 5,000 pounds and standing 9'7", Sparty is the the tallest free-standing terra cotta sculpture in the world. These are the bricks that supported this MSU monument for 60 years.

Many of the bricks taken from the base of "Sparty", bear pieces of images that represent the major varsity sports at that time, including a football player, runner, diver, basketball player, swimmer, wrestler, golfer, tennis player, fencer and rider.
