The following information should be considered when disposing of potentially hazardous materials at Michigan State University.
Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), formerly The Office of Radiation, Chemical & Biological Safety (ORCBS), supports the mission and guiding principles of Michigan State University through leadership, guidance, education and partnership to promote and establish programs in health and safety, protection of the environment and regulatory compliance.
EHS provides the University with safety training, the development and administration of occupational health programs, regulatory compliance, and hazardous substance spill response. Specific services in the following categories can be found on their website at www.ehs.msu.edu.
It is the responsibility of the department requesting pickup that all items adhere to the Materials Acceptance Guidelines described in this document and found online here.
It is also the responsibility of the department that the items are free from any chemical, biological or otherwise hazardous materials, all warning stickers are removed, and any required paperwork is attached to the items.
MSU Surplus Store & Recycling Center Staff go through EHS’ Asbestos Training before they begin working with the collection of materials. All other training is provided by Full Time Surplus Store Staff Members or Supervisors with the majority done in the field and is hands on.
