Vintage Folkpatterns Activities Suitcase

Item Details:

  • In 1978, the Michigan State University Museum and Michigan 4-H Youth Development teamed together to develop Folk-patterns, a program to engage youth across the state of Michigan in cultural heritage educational activities. With support from National Endowment for the Humanities grants, 4-H education and museum-based humanities specialists, along with youth advisors and community-based volunteer leaders, planned and implemented an array of programs, publications, and events that have engaged thousands of youth and their adult leaders in investigations of personal, family, and community histories and folk traditions.
  • This suitcase is an embodiment of that program, and is filled with a variety of books, activities, games, and much more.
  • The case was originally meant to be used by an adult (as a guide) with a group of children, in an effort to teach and enjoy the vastness of our cultural world.
  • Within the plastic and metal rivetted case, you will find an itemized contents list, 6 boxes of items & activities, 2 folders of crafts & informational booklets, 6 books/binders of supplemental information, and a full 80 slide carousel of images (see pictures).
  • This suitcase is a dream come true for an amateur anthropologist, although it takes no prior knowledge to dive into this time capsule of cultural heritage.
  • Purchasers may also decide to simply use the box for its intended purpose, which will certainly only bring a joyous and informative time.
  • The program was started in 1978, but this particular case has elements from between the dates of 1978-1983.
